Greek Geometric Bronze Votive Bell Ornament

Greece, Geometric Period, ca. 8th to 7th century CE. A cast bronze openwork panel decorated with circles and dangling bells. The upper pendant is composed of a triangular piece of bronze with a finial loop and protruding disc shaped tabs from the top and the lower sides. The edges are decorated with concentric circles incised along the peripheries - the circles are believed to be a ward against the evil eye. Three integral loops hold two dangling ornaments or bells, that may have held a ball or stones to emit sound. Bells such as this were thought to be hung in trees or sacred areas as votive gifts to the gods. Size: 3" W x 5.75" H (7.6 cm x 14.6 cm)

Condition Report: Missing one dangling bell. Loss to the ring loop on one bell, but still secured to panel loop. Surface abrasions and nicks throughout. Mineral deposits and rich green patina.
