Greek Gnathian Blackware Trefoil Oinochoe

Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, near Ignazia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A beautiful wheel-thrown pottery oinochoe with a ringed foot, a bulbous piriform body, a corseted neck with a trefoil-style spout, and an applied handle arching between rim and shoulder. The black-glazed vessel is decorated on the front with fugitive white, red, and yellow pigment with a register of tongues, alternating red-and-white bars, a row of dots, a solid red bar, and a faded register of ivy leaves sprouting from the vine. Size: 3.625" W x 6.4" H (9.2 cm x 16.3 cm).

Minor abrasions to foot, body, spout, and handle, with fading to areas of black glaze and fugitive pigment, and light encrustations within interior. Light earthen deposits and faint traces of silver iridescence on black-glazed areas. Old inventory labels beneath base.
