Greek Gold Alexander III Stater, 8.5 g

Kings of Macedon, Alexander III 'the Great'. 336 to 323 BCE. AV Stater (gram weight here). Arados mint. Struck under Menes, circa 325/4-324/3 BCE. Obverse: Helmeted head of Athena right. Reverse: Nike standing left, holding wreath and stylus; AP monogram in left field. Price 3423 (Byblos). A beautifully struck obverse. Size: 0.7" Diameter (1.8 cm); total weight: 8.5 grams.

Alexander the Great needs no introduction, and his coinage had subsequent international fame. Although they began to be minted during his lifetime, coins in his name were also issued for two decades after his death by the generals who had divided up his empire, and similar coins were minted by cities for over two centuries to be issued as international coinage.

Provenance: ex-Johnson collection, Houston, Texas, USA, acquired approximately 2008 by family descent
