Greek Hellenistic Antefix Fragment Acanthus - TL Tested

Greece, Hellenistic periods ca. late 4th to 2nd century BCE. A beautiful ceramic decorative antefix, a vertical block made to cover the lower end of the tiles of a roof. On the grandest buildings, they were carved from stone; other public-facing buildings, like smaller temples and homes, they were mold-made from ceramic. This example features a large acanthus motif and a lower border of Greek keys. The Greek key/meander design has been interpreted to mean infinity and unity, perhaps based on the roll of waves on the sea. Imagine the front of a building decorated with repeated examples of this antefix, its surface brightly colored with paint! Size: 8.4" W x 7.7" H (21.3 cm x 19.6 cm)

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.
