Greek Hellenistic Marble Fragmentary Head, ex Bonhams
Ancient Greece, Hellenistic, ca. 3rd century BCE. A section of a life-sized carved marble head belonging to a youthful male who presents a youthful visage comprised of deep-set, heavy lidded almond-shaped eyes, a boldly delineated browline, traces of his nose and full lips, and a long wavy coiffure with a diadem above the curls framing his face. "Ephesus K.L.C. 1908" is handwritten in black on the verso, suggesting that the piece was found in Ephesus in 1908 as noted in Bonhams listing. Ephesus was one of 12 cities of the Ionian League, and according to legend, Ephesus was founded by a tribe of Amazons. Size: 6.5" L x 7" W x 8.75" H (16.5 cm x 17.8 cm x 22.2 cm); 12.5" H (31.8 cm) on included custom stand.
