Greek Hellenistic Megarian Pottery Redware Cup

[ translate ]

**First Time At Auction**

Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. late 3rd to 1st century BCE. A lovely redware pottery bowl with a deep red color and a stamped design around the exterior, centered on the base, which is rounded and has a large floral motif stretching up to a narrow register just below the rim. These Megarian-style bowls, by being mold-made rather than thrown on a wheel, allowed artisans to produce bowls with intricate stamped designs that we believe are in imitation of more-expensive metal bowls. They were made to be owned by people aspiring to wealth, or at least an appearance of it. Bowls like this one were used as drinking cups, replacing the kantharos. Size: 3.5" W x 2.125" H (8.9 cm x 5.4 cm).

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection acquired before 2000

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#131807
Condition Report: One large section repaired with small chips, overpainting, and resurfacing along break lines. Expected age-commensurate surface wear, small nicks and chips to rim, body, and base, with fading to some detailing, otherwise very good. Nice earthen deposits, mineral deposits, and light encrustations throughout.
