Greek Hellenistic Pottery Vessel of Standing Woman

[ translate ]

Greece, Hellenistic, ca. late 4th to early 3rd century BCE. A gorgeous vessel in the form of a standing woman. Her slender, youthful body, draped artistically in a himation, forms the cavity of the vessel, shown in high relief on one side, with the remains of white pigment. She is posed dynamically, with one foot forward, and one arm reaching up to play what looks like a lute held on one shoulder. A large, applied flower is above her head, resting at the base of the narrow spout, which flares outward to a wide rim. A tiny loop handle projects from the back of the spout. The other side of the vessel is undecorated, and painted a glossy black. Who does this young woman represent? Perhaps a mourner, as this vessel was likely intended to hold offerings in the grave, or perhaps one of the Muses. Size: 2.7" W x 7.8" H (6.9 cm x 19.8 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Arte Primitivo, New York, USA, Auction 48, October 2008, Lot 56; ex-Winifred Karpf estate collection, New York City, USA, acquired prior to 1980

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
