Greek Hellenistic Terracotta Figure - Nude Aphrodite

Ancient Greece, Hellenistic period, ca. 4th to 2nd century BCE. A hollow-molded terracotta seated figure depicting Aphrodite, the goddess of romance, beauty, and love. Aphrodite presents nude with legs held tightly together, a slight mound on her abdomen, perky breasts, and sloping shoulders that taper to form the feminine neck. Her face is slightly downcast to the right and bears almond-shaped eyes, a slender aquiline nose, full lips with indented corners, and smooth cheeks, all beneath a conical coiffure. Pale orange slip covers the entire figure and imbues it with a flesh-like tone. Size: 2.2" W x 5.6" H (5.6 cm x 14.2 cm); 8.125" H (20.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in September 2016; ex-private Westerlo, Antwerp, Belgium collection

Condition Report: Repairs to head and neck, with resurfacing and light overpainting along break lines. Losses to arms and lower legs as shown. Minor nicks and abrasions to legs, body, and head, with a couple of stable hairline fissures on coiffure, and softening to some finer details. Light earthen deposits and nice traces of original pigment throughout.
