Griffin & George Microid Standard Model Analytical Beam Balance in Mahogany Case.

A vintage laboratory analytical beam balance manufactured by Griffin & George Limited and Griffin & Tatlock Ltd in Great Britain. The instrument features a central polished brass pillar supporting a horizontal brass beam, which is engraved with a numerical scale from 0 to 20 and marked 250GM alongside a triangular logo containing the letters G & T. Two brass weighing pans are suspended from the beam by brass stirrups. The mechanism is mounted upon a dark brown composite base plate, which bears a moulded rectangular mark reading GRIFFIN & GEORGE LIMITED LONDON BIRMINGHAM MANCHESTER GLASGOW EDINBURGH MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN with a central griffin device. A cream-coloured celluloid scale at the foot of the pillar is printed with a graduated vertical scale and reads MICROID STANDARD MODEL. The balance is housed within a mahogany-framed glazed case featuring a sliding front sash with a black metal latch mechanism. A dark metal plaque fixed to the top exterior of the case reads GRIFFIN & TATLOCK Ltd. LONDON GLASGOW EDINBURGH MANCHESTER BIRMINGHAM Standley Belcher & Mason Ltd. MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN. The case is fitted with four adjustable brass levelling feet at the corners. A damaged paper label on the glass pane is hand-inscribed T. N. JENKINS.

More Information

The internal brass beam, stirrups, and pans appear complete and visually intact, though the mechanical function is untested. The brass pans show heavy oxidation, surface corrosion, and spotting (photo 4). The central brass pillar and beam exhibit general surface tarnishing. The mahogany case shows significant signs of wear, including multiple scuffs, scratches, and a chip to the wood at the lower-left front corner (photo 5). A small section of the wood frame on the left side shows a crack and surface loss (photo 6). The exterior metal maker's plaque displays surface rust and pitting (photo 2). The paper label on the glass is torn and discoloured (photo 1). The glass panels are intact without visible cracks.
