Grossular var. Hessonite Jeffrey Mine, Asbestos, Les Sources...

[ translate ]

Grossular var. Hessonite Jeffrey Mine, Asbestos, Les Sources RCM, Estrie, Québec, Canada "A 3.5 inch mound of intergrown gemmy orange/brown crystals so typical of the kind that the mine at Asbestos produces. The crystals are up to about .75 inch across and some of them are of gem quality. Bought from Bruno Carriere, a miner at Asbestos in the in [sic] the open pit mine. The scale under the specimen is an inch with a rule at one cm." - Rock H. Currier Humans have a terrible habit of assuming that things will stay the same, or, that they should. Nature doesn't work that way and mining economics don't either. We all assumed that the goodies coming from: Tsumeb or Batopilas or the Jeffrey Mine would just keep on coming. Wrong. Ore bodies run out, companies get sued by various entities and go bankrupt. Miners move on, leaving a hole in the ground. There was a time when these lovely cinnamon colored garnets were all over dealer tables, but that was then, and this is now. Now the only way to get a fine one like this is to wait for a collection to be broken up. That's it. "Mine's closed. No more. You go 'way now!" There is a moral to this story, and that is to get them while they are plentiful. Get them when you feel like they are everywhere and the supply will never run out ... because sure as hell, some day there won't be tons of them to pick and choose from. Overall Measurements: 3.5 x 2.8 x 1.6 inches (9.0 x 7.0 x 4.0 cm) Offered at no reserve Provenance: Bought from Bruno Carriere [RHC #1687, acquired 1972] MinID 6F5-RHF [Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
