Grouping of items belonging to Lt. Colonel G.W. Frederick, 209th Pennsylvania Infantry. Grouping accompanied by a ink manuscript card with printed name on reverse "Stanley W. Landis". Note on obverse states "Personal effects of Lt. Col. G.W. Frederick of the 209th Regt. Pa. Inf. Col. Frederick was brevetted Colonel for gallantry at Petersburg and was personal guard to Mrs. Mary Surratt, one on the Lincoln conspirators who was hanged.". Grouping includes: 1.) Pair of Lt. Colonel of infantry shoulder straps measuring 1.25" x 3.75". Straps exhibit some surface damage to one strap. 2.) Single Lt. Colonel bullion thread oak leaf on black material measuring 1.5" x 1.5". 3.) Officers hat cord with wear and loss to one acorn. 4.) Cloth and hand sewn "housewife" measuring 5" x 18" when unrolled. 5.) A 5-draw telescope measuring 23.25" when opened. Barrel engraved "Benj. Pike & Sons, Opticians, 518 Broadway, New York" with other side of barrel engraved "U.S. Engr. Dept.". End barrel wrapped in rayskin that exhibits dryness and cracking. 6.) Small brass collapsible map magnifying glass measuring 1" x 0.75" closed. 7.) Civil War period tin camp cup measuring 4.25" diameter, 2" tall with handle. Underside of cup scratch engraved "G.W.F.". George W. Frederick enlisted on September 8, 1864 as a Captain and was commissioned into Company G, 209th Pennsylvania Infantry on September 8, 1864. Frederick was promoted to lieutenant colonel on September 16, 1864 and breveted colonel on April 2, 1865. He was discharged on July 19, 1865. There is a noted photograph of General Hartranft and his staff taken on the day that the Lincoln conspirators were hung that Frederick appears in. After the Civil War he became a Lutheran minister dying in 1904. Provenance: Stanley Landis collection the collection of Eugene T.
