Grover Cleveland Early Signed Legal Document with Related Papers

An autograph legal document, 1p, measuring 7.5" x 5.25", Buffalo, New York, dated September 18, 1857. A partially printed Notice of Argument, written but not signed by Grover Cleveland during his time as a young law clerk at the Court of Appeals. The document states that an appeal of the case between City Bank of Columbus vs. Watson A. Fox and Elijah K. Biner was to be held in Albany on the fifth Tuesday of September (September 29, 1857). Together with a transmittal letter, dated December 21, 1926, from Buffalo, New York, sending the Cleveland document to a Thomas Weadlock for his collection. Signed by Louis L. Babcock of Locke, Babcock, Hollister & Brown.

5. 1819 ALS. 2pp of a bifolium, measuring 8" x 12", New York, dated April 1, 1819. J. E. Robinson to D. Robinson Jr. regarding people soliciting the firm for business.

The Grover Cleveland autograph document is in very good condition, with light soiling and foxing. Bold writing. The rest of the documents have flattened folds, with varying degrees of light toning, soiling, and foxing. Bold signatures. Overall very good.

In 1850, the Cleveland family moved to Clinton, New York, and Grover was educated at Fayetteville Academy and the Clinton Liberal Academy. He left school in 1853 when his father died and worked for a period as an assistant teacher. In 1855, he moved to Buffalo, New York, where her uncle, Lewis F. Allen, gave him a job as a legal clerk at Rogers, Bowen, and Rogers. Cleveland would work at the firm until 1862, when he opened his own law practice.
