Landscape with a gateway to left, after Guercino; figures along a roadway, buildings amongst trees behind This is an etching makes part of a series by Pesne of Guercdino's landscape designs published by Tomasso Colli preceded with a title engraving designed by Guercino's nephew an heir Cesare Gennari(1637-1688) We have to go back to a drawing now in the British Museum that was made after this etching (see last image for reference only) to find more info. While describing this drawing after Guercino. Popham mentiones the series counted fourtheen landscapes by Guercino (see Bagni, 1985, pp. 65ff. ; this print is reproduced on p. 79) . The original drawings shown in these prints are, with two exceptions, at Chatsworth (see Turner and Plazzotta 1991, cat. nos. 166-8) A rare, large scale etching catching the sublime design of Guercino, produced in direct contact with Guercino or his heir Cesare Gennari and dedicated on title etching to the Duke of Modena. Signed bottom left G. F. B. Inv. , at right G. Penna F. Parigi. Numbered '1' bottom right corner. Large watermarked laid paper sheet with flattened middle fold. Trimmed just outside plate border with small margins, perhaps a bit short beneath the blanc text line.
