Guerrero Mezcala Two-Stranded Y-Necklace

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $300**

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero, Mezcala culture (Balsas culture), ca. 700 to 200 BCE. A charming miniature greenstone mask, a classic symbol of this culture, on a chain with three Mesoamerican copper beads that hang below hundreds of red, black, and grey shell seed beads interspersed along the double-stranded gold-plated modern chain. Strand is: 19" L (48.3 cm); greenstone head is: 0.7" H (1.8 cm)

Greenstone was more valuable than gold in Mesoamerica, and the mask included here would have been a valuable item, perhaps buried with its owner to mark their passing and give them identity in the grave. Outside the grave, the dead were sometimes represented in art merely by a mask, or a mask set upon a small pyramid.

Provenance: private Denver, Colorado USA collection, Hank Johnson, before 2000

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#129816
Condition Report: All beads are in nice condition, with expected wear commensurate with age. Copper beads have nice patina. Modern gold-plated chain and clasps.
