Guerrero Xalitla Terracotta Seated Figure

[ translate ]

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero region, Xalitla culture, ca. 1200 to 900 BCE. A fascinating ceramic figure of a seated person of indeterminate gender, rendered in a lifelike manner with nice facial details. The figure is seated cross-legged, with the hands resting in the lap. Short hair, large ears, and wide eyes mark the face. Red pigment covers the entirety of the piece. Unlike the Olmec, who seem to have deliberately abstracted human figures, perhaps to remove them from the quotidian world, the artisans of this area seemed intent on creating the most naturalistic representations possible. Size: 1.4" W x 1.7" H (3.6 cm x 4.3 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Michael Haskell collection, California, USA

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#148324 Dimensions: Condition Report: Repaired and restored from multiple pieces. This is well done and difficult to discern. Light deposits on surface.
