The spot paintings were created primarily during Förg’s last major creative phase, between 2005 and 2010. They are considered his most liberated series, in which he completely dissolved the geometric structures of his grid paintings and celebrated the pure, dancing gesture of color.
“Fundamentally, as soon as we engage with painting, we have the same problems that faced those at the beginning of the century or even before: problems around colour, form, composition”
(the artist cited in David Ryan, Talking Painting, Dialogues with Twelve Contemporary Abstract Painters, New York 2002, p. 80)
