Gustave Baumann’s Indian Pottery, Old and New, published by Koshare Press in Santa Fe in 1919, brings his skill as a woodcut artist to the study of Native American pottery. Baumann wrote the text and carved both the lettering and illustrations into woodblocks, creating a unified, handcrafted book in which words and images share the same graphic character. The volume reflects his interest in Southwestern Indigenous art and reveals a less familiar aspect of his work as a book designer.
Gustave Baumann was a German-born American printmaker, painter, and designer best known for his richly colored woodblock prints of the American Southwest. Born in Magdeburg, Germany, he immigrated to Chicago as a child, studied both at the Art Institute of Chicago and in Munich, and settled in Santa Fe in 1918, where he became one of the city’s most admired twentieth-century artists. In addition to the color woodcuts for which he is best known, Baumann worked across painting, drawing, sculpture, furniture, and marionettes, and played an important role in the artistic life of Santa Fe.
