Gypsum var. Selenite Naica Mine, Naica, Saucillo Municipality, Chihuahua, Mexico 64.8 x 7.9 x 4.0 cm (25.51 x 3.11 x 1.57 in) Many collectors, regardless of their experience, have likely heard of the "Cave of Swords" and the gargantuan Gypsum crystals that lie within. While this Selenite crystal is not going to be dwarfing a full-grown adult any time soon, it is an undeniably substantial specimen weighing a hefty 3525.4 grams overall. The entire crystal is remarkably transparent and colorless with plenty of striated features lining all but the flatter prismatic faces. Two slight "bends" are present at the termination and near the base of the specimen. The latter of the two is punctuated by a white field of internal re-healed internal fractures and a surficial bed of smaller Gypsum crystals. This piece holds a special place in the John Warn collection, as it was one of his earliest, larger expenditures on a specimen. John acquired the piece at the 1996 Denver Gem and Mineral Show from Bill Stone, the founder and previous owner of The Sunnywood Collection while he was still selling mineral specimens on his exotic wooden bases. This piece comes with an older-style Sunnywood base and stand made from Australian lacewood and a plexiglass cover. The base allows for 360-degree rotation on the specimen and comes equipped with a light that allows for illumination directly below the Selenite crystal. Noted on the placard is the collection identification number #TSC2072. Wooden Stand Measurements: 91.8 x 31.8 x 31.8 cm (36.14 x 12.52 x 12.52 in) Plexiglass Measurements: 72.4 x 27.9 x 27.9 cm (28.50 x 10.98 x 10.98 in) From the collection of John Warn [MEX9690a].
