€2,000

HAAS NEVEUX & CO.: AN ART DECO DIAMOND LAPEL WATCH, CIRCA 1920 The shield-shaped case pavé-set throughout with old and single-cut diamonds within pierced geometric strapwork borders, centring three collet-set diamonds to the front, the reverse revealing the dial with Arabic numerals and blued steel hands, blue cabochon crown, dial signed Haas Genève, suspended from a double-row of similarly-cut diamond suspension with clasp, millegrain set throughout, mounted in platinum, diamonds approximately 2.50cts total, French assay marks, 18-jewel manual wind movement, movement signed Haas Neveux Genève, mov no. GG354, case no. 85195, length 9.2cm

Founded in Geneva in 1848 by brothers Leopold and Benjamin Haas, Haas & Co. built its reputation on precision watchmaking and small-scale production. From the outset, the firm specialised in finely made watches and chronometers, some of which were submitted to the demanding precision trials of the Geneva Observatory.

As the family business expanded, it became Haas Neveux & Cie. in 1884. The firm was also notably inventive. Among its more unusual creations was a pocket watch that could be wound simply by opening and closing the case, a mechanism later patented and exhibited at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago.

Haas Neveux's reputation for chronometry was reinforced by notable successes at the Geneva Observatory, including three first prizes in the early twentieth century, as well as honours at exhibitions across Europe. Producing on a selective rather than industrial scale, the house combined technical ingenuity with the precision and refinement for which Geneva watchmaking was renowned.
