A Gold-Lacquer Five-Case Inro
Edo period (1615-1868), mid-19th century
Of rounded rectangular form, the kinji ground lacquered in iroe togidashi maki-e and e-nashiji with Ebisu on one side parodied as a puppeteer, manipulating the strings tied around a red tai (sea bream) as it performs a New Year's dance wearing a sanbaso hat, holding a fan and brandishing a cluster of suzu (bells) shown on the reverse, signed on the base of the bottom case in gold lacquer Yoyusai saku; with a lacquered gourd ojime. 7.5cm x 5.5cm (2 15/16in x 2 3/16in).
