Title: HAUNT OF FEAR No. 16
Place Published:
Publisher:EC [Indicia: Fables Publishing Co., Inc.]
Date Published: November-December, 1952
Description:

VG+ (4.5). Cream to tan pages. Cover slightly misbound with extra white at spine, tiny chip to bottom right corner of front cover, soiling to back cover, a few tiny flecks of staple rust. If not for tiny corner chip would be 6.0. Professionally cleaned and pressed by Comics In A Flash. Plots and scripts: Bill Gaines, Al Feldstein. Art: Graham Ingels, George Evans, Jack Kamen, Jack Davis. Ray Bradbury adaptation: "The Coffin." GPAnalysis: A 4.5 sold for $202 in October 2021.

Royal chef, "fed up" with the king's gluttony, turns him into sausage. Man forces doctor to perform unethical experiments to restore his lost vitality, a metaphor for impotence in those dark pre-Viagra years? Undersea vampiress "wets" her appetite for human blood. Self-burying coffin kills and disposes of victim in nightmare version of mechanized efficiency.

"Outside of the pulp novels of Mickey Spillane and the films of Sam Fuller, there were few places in the arts, high or low, where sadism, unpunished murder, and the triumph of evil were so welcome." — David Hadju, The Ten-Cent Plague: The Great Comic-Book Scare and How It Changed America. FSG: 2008, p. 183.

A deluxe limited edition of 12 hardcover catalogues is available, in addition to a small number of softcovers. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $40, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Eight of the 12 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com.
