First French edition of Hearne’s description of his discoveries on behalf of the Hudson’s Bay Company. First published in English in 1795, Hearne’s account focusses much attention on the natural history and Native American tribes of the region. Appointed governor of Prince of Wales's Fort in 1775, Hearne was forced to surrender to La Perouse in 1782 and return to England. La Perouse saved Hearne’s manuscript and returned it to the British for publication. Brunet III 71.
Quarto (249 x 194mm). 9 folding engraved plates (a few spots, one margin chipped, one repaired marginal tear). Contemporary mottled calf, red morocco spine label gilt lettered, spine gilt. Provenance: Bibliotheque du Chateau de ? (label partly erased).
