HERCULES AND CACUS (BARTSCH 231; STRAUSS 403; BIALLER 25II/III)

Chiaroscuro woodcut from three blocks, printed in black, brown and ochre, 1588, a very good impression, the tone blocks printing richly, though the line block printing dryly in places, Strauss’s second or third state (of four) (before Janssen’s address or with the address trimmed off), Bialler's I or III states (of VI), printing with very strong relief, unframed

Condition Report:
With narrow to thread margins, in generally good condition, the lower left corner made up and touched in with pen and ink, the usual drying fold split and supported at the sides (approx. 9cm at left and 3.5cm at right), two tiny splits along the drying fold, a further tiny split towards the upper right sheet edge (perhaps associated with the heavy relief), three small retouched areas in the genitals of Hercules, Cacus and the nude figure upper left, a minor white accretion towards the lower left and lower sheet edges, a few minor creases, unframed.
