HENRI de TOULOUSE-LAUTREC, (French, 1864-1901), Divan
HENRI de TOULOUSE-LAUTREC
(French, 1864-1901)
Divan Japonais
lithograph in colors on wove paper
image: 31 5/8 x 23 1/2 in., frame: 45 x 41 in.
Provenance: A Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts Lady.
Other Notes: The Divan Japonais was a café-concert frequented by Toulouse Lautrec at 75 rue des Martyrs, Paris. This poster for the establishment is particularly noteworthy, as it is the only example of Lautrec's posters that shows both Jane Avril and Yvette Guilbert in the same image. Here, Guilbert stands on the stage on which she began her career, identified by her iconic long black gloves, while fellow performer Arvil sits as a spectator alongside Edouard Dujardin.
