The bronze was executed in 1852 by the Ames Manufacturing Company in Chicopee, Massachusetts. The edition amount is unknown and the only known example with a foundry mark is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
Henry Kirke Brown was an accomplished and influential 19th Century sculpture who focused on Native Americans, historic figures and large-scale public works including the statue of George Washington in Union Square, New York City.
