HENRY SCOTT TUKE (1858-1929) Marine, 1898 signed 'H.S.T, 98' (lower right) watercolour 12.5 x 19.5 cm Label on reverse reads: 'Painter in oil, watercolour and pastel of figure sucjects and portraits. Born in York. Studied at the Salde School 1875-80, in Italy for a year and in Paris under J P Laurens 1881-83. Exhibited at the RA from 1879. Elected a member of the NEAC 1886, ARWS 1904, RWS 1911, ARA 1900 and RA 1914. Lived for many years at Newlyn, Cornwall and then near Falmouth. Painted many sea subjects including nude boyds by the shore. Represented in several public collections.' Tuke was associated with the Newlyn School, a group of artists who settled in the Cornish fishing village of Newlyn in the late 19th century. Inspired by the coastal landscape and the local fishing community, Tuke became known for his luminous and atmospheric paintings of the sea and the human figure.
