[HERBERT, HENRY WILLIAM (FRANK FORESTER)]
Fishing With Hook and Line: A Manual for Amateur Anglers. Containing Descriptions of Popular Fishes and Their Habits, Preparation of Baits, &c. &c. New York: Published at the Brother Jonathan Office, [1858]

8vo (6 5/8 x 4 5/16 in.; 161 x 110 mm). 64pp., 8 plates, in-text illustrations; some foxing, annotations in pencil and ink. Original buff wrappers, pictorially printed with angling scene and Kirby Hooks; some soiling, overall wear with some loss, particularly to spine, old glue repairs along spine. Quarter red morocco over red cloth covered board folding chemise, spine gilt-lettered.

First edition of one of the rarest of all American fishing books

Van Winkle knew of only two copies (those in his collection). In terms of size and arrangement, the present copy matches most closely with his Copy A, except that there is an eighth plate present here ("Cat-fish", facing p. 34), which was present in his Copy B (facing p. 35), but not Copy A. Van Winkle notes: "Since there is no list of illustrations, it may be assumed that the difference in the plates is due to the binder, and is not a 'point' of issue."
