12mo (7 x 4 1/4 in.; 178 x 109 mm). Minor foxing. Half dark blue morocco over marbled boards, spine with raised bands in five compartments, second gilt-lettered, edges speckled red, decorative endpapers; overall rubbed, some chips to morocco.

First edition. "This work, generally acclaimed Herbert's finest sporting novel, first appeared in The American Turf Register and Sporting Magazine, from May to November, 1839" (Van Winkle). A celebrated American sporting novel, originally issued in wrappers, few of which survive.
