HERMAN HERZOG | SCENE ON THE SUSQUEHANNA NEAR PEQUEA

[ translate ]

HERMAN HERZOG
1831 - 1932
SCENE ON THE SUSQUEHANNA NEAR PEQUEA

signed H. Herzog (lower left)
oil on canvas
27 by 22 inches
(68.6 by 55.9 cm)

Condition Report:
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes, Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.

This work has not been recently restored. The canvas is unlined and still on its original stretcher. There seems to be something behind the canvas in the upper left and upper right which is causing slightly unevenness to the surface.

There does not appear to be any abrasion to the paint layer. There are some restorations, most of which are slightly heavy handed and could be improved. Under ultraviolet light, it can be seen that there is an area of broad restoration in the lower center sky. This restoration probably attends to a fairly small paint loss; it is slightly discolored and could certainly be improved. There is a small area of brown directly above the waterfall in the center left that may be restoration or an original artist correction. There is an area of pigment in the lower left corner above the signature that reads slightly differently to the naked eye and under ultraviolet light, but this seems to be original. There is a similar area in the upper left that may also be restoration or an artist correction.
The picture seems to be in good state, and a small amount of attention would make notable improvements.

In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
