La tête a été taillée dans un bloc de marbre «giallo antico». Elle reproduit une tête masculine barbue à l’expression courroucée : la guirlande de lierre posée sur son front permet de l’identifier avec Papposilène, le vieux satyre qui a joué le rôle de père adoptif pour le jeune Dionysos/Bacchus.
Complet et en bon état, mais recollés à partir de nombreux fragments, quelques fragments sont perdues.

A roman giallo antico herm of Papposilenus.
The head was carved from a block of “giallo antico” marble. It reproduces a bearded male head with an angry expression: the ivy garland placed on his forehead identifies him with Papposilene, the old satyr who played the role of adoptive father for the young Dionysus / Bacchus.
Complete and in good condition, but glued together from many fragments, some fragments are lost. Ca. 1st - 2nd century A.D
