A Pair of Imperial Silver Handled Matching Presentation Vases
Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century
Each of slender baluster form with a trumpet neck and finely worked in low relief, the neck applied in flat gold relief with a 16-petalled kiku-mon (chrysanthemum crest) at either side above a wide gold-rimmed band enclosing a flock of chidori (plovers or dotterels) in flight, chiselled in silver high relief, the body of plain polished silver, another wide gold-rimmed band above the foot decorated with stylised waves similarly chiselled in silver high relief, the neck and foot rim with a narrow band of key fret, signed on the base of each vase Hirata Shigemitsu tsukuru, Mitsuhashi Katsushige horu (Made by Hirata Shigemitsu, engraved by Mitsuhashi Katsuhide); each vase with a wood stand, and a storage box with an inscribed paper label inside the lid. Each vase: 34.2cm (13½in) high. (5).
Hirata Shigemitsu (1855-1926) was one of the most prominent metal-hammering craftsmen of the Meiji period. He produced works mainly for the Imperial Household and exhibited regularly in international exhibitions. In 1887, he founded together with Kurokawa Eisho (1854-1917), the metal-hammering division of the Tokyo Chokokai (Tokyo Society of Metal Artists).
