LOT 2054

HISTORICAL WOODEN BUTTE, MONTANA SIGN.

[ translate ]

In the mid to late 1800's, the Chinese and Japanese migrated or were brought by companies to Montana for work where they were compensated at a much lower wage. Jobs were being lost to the Montana residents, which angered many, even as businesses were even being built by the Asian communities. As labeled, the "Victory Labor Management Committee" of Butte, Montana created this sign, depicting an Asian faced figure imposed on an octopus's body. Above the caricature reads "So Happy/ Hide Tools From Partner" and nailed onto the wooden sign are two pipe wrenches, a saw, an axe, etc.. This comes as American workers would hide the tools from the Chinese and Japanese to prevent them from performing. CONDITION: Wear is seen throughout and the piece has aged to a desirable patina. This is a fantastic and eerie historical piece. It was found in one of the several mines of Butte, Montana by a prominent collector from Silver Star Montana. This is not a standard shippable item and will require 3rd party shipping or pickup arrangements to be made. Condition: (7.0). Dimensions: 42" x 1 - 1/2" x 47 - 1/2".
