HOLLAR, WENCESLAUS

ORNATUS MULIEBRIS ANGLICANUS. OR THE SEVERALL HABITS OF ENGLISH WOMEN FROM THE NOBILITIE TO THE CONTRY WOMAN, AS THEY ARE IN THESE TIMES. LONDON: WENCESLAUS HOLLAR, 1640 [AND LATER]

4to, the complete set of engraved title and 26 etched plates (most 135 x 73mm to the plate mark), dated 1638, 1639 or 1640, some undated;
together with a duplicate later set of 26 plates, all interleaved, and one extra plate of a cavalier (by Abraham Hogenberg after Hollar) at the end, comprising 53 plates in total;
each leaf inlaid, some leaves with watermarks, later tan morocco gilt, green morocco label on spine, gilt edges, some spotting to endpapers, very slight edge-wear to binding

HOLLAR'S FINE FASHION PLATES. These plates remained very popular, and were reproduced until the nineteenth century (as evident here, with the addition of a later duplicate set). According to Pennington the different states are not clearly attributable to any particular issue, but this set appears to be an early issue, with the earliest version of the title-page (see Pennington p.292).
Loosely inserted are four autograph letters signed by Henry Howard of the Royal Collections at Windsor, to the previous owner Mr Hollebone, seeking to purchase this volume for the Royal Library (4 Argyll Road, Kensington, and Cortington, Wiltshire, 1933-1941).

LITERATURE:
Pennington 1778-1803; STC 13599.5

PROVENANCE:
Mr Hollebone, four letters to him loosely inserted
