HOLY LAND, CYPRUS, SYRIA AND MIDDLE EAST ASIAE IIII TAB
HOLY LAND, CYPRUS, SYRIA AND MIDDLE EAST ASIAE IIII TAB
Featuring two pages of Latin text and a map of the Holy Land and surrounding regions from a historical atlas, part of a series derived from the Geographia of Claudius Ptolemy, with significant contributions by Gerard Mercator, first published in 1584 by Godefridi Kempensis.
Gerardus Mercator (1512–1594), celebrated cartographer, mathematician and philosopher, is best known for the Mercator projection, which revolutionised maritime navigation by allowing straight-line courses to be plotted on a flat map. Alongside his pioneering work in modern cartography, Mercator had a profound interest in Claudius Ptolemy and the geography of the ancient world. This interest led him to publish his own edition of Ptolemy’s Geographia, including a remarkable map depicting the Holy Land, Cyprus, Syria and the surrounding regions.
