HONGREN (1610-1664), ATTRIBUTED TO, CHINESE PAINTING OF INK PLUM BLOSSOMS
A Chinese painting attributed to Hongren (1610-1664), ink plum blossoms. This painting depicts a sparse plum branch rising upward. The trunk is outlined with succinct, forceful lines; the aged trunk is tough as iron, while slender twigs stretch out spare and sharp. With only a few strokes, the work attains a pure, solitary beauty. Sparse blossoms dot the branches, rendered plainly without color, capturing the cold plum's refined, transcendent demeanour.
Ink on paper, hanging scroll.
Image: 78 x 52 cm.
Note: The work bears an inscription in the name of Hongren, with seal marks. Additional colophons are present. The inscription is dated Dingyou (1657).
Provenance: By repute, from an important private collection.
Gustav Ecke (1896-1971) was a German art historian and scholar of Chinese art. The couple moved to Hawaii in 1949, where Ecke served as curator of Chinese art at the Honolulu Academy of Arts and as professor of Asian art at the University of Hawaii from 1950 to 1966.
