Heading:
Author:
Title: HORRIFIC No. 8
Place Published:
Publisher:Comic Media [Indicia: Harwell Publications, Inc.]
Date Published: November, 1953
Description:

VG+ (4.5). Tiny nick at top spine, rubs to spine near logo, rubbing to "IF" in "HORRIFIC," faint crease to top right corner of front cover, staples pulled. Off-white pages. Cover: Don Heck. Art: Don Heck (two stories and two single page pieces), Rudy Palais, Pete Morisi. GPAnalysis: No sales in this grade in several years. A 4.0 sold for $300 in August 2020; a 3.5 sold for $360 in December 2019.

Featuring Don Heck's nutty "Herschel's Hair," in which a bald barber gets rebuffed by a gal due to his gleaming pate, and decides to scalp a corpse to make himself a wig. Unfortunately, the corpse he scalped was a vampire, and soon the barber and his toupee of terror are prowling the streets hungry for blood. Probably swiped from Standard's "The Fatal Strand" (Adventures into Darkness #8, Feb. 1953), although it predates another hair-based Standard horror story, "The Wig" (Out of the Shadows #11, Jan. 1954).

A deluxe limited edition of 12 hardcover catalogues is available, in addition to a small number of softcovers. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $40, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Eight of the 12 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com.

Consignments welcome for PBA's Spring 2022 Comic Book sale. Top prices for Pre-Code Horror, Golden Age, Silver Age, original art and ephemera. Find out why PBA is the new fan-fave of comics auctioneers. "This is some of the best commentary I've yet seen on the quality of the content of comic books... Priceless." — R. Crumb.
