The painting belongs to the series of “The Golden Lotus”.
From 1940 to 1950, Hu completed 30 works based on the content of “The Golden Lotus” and this is one of them, which was painted on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month in 1944.
“The Golden Lotus” is a Ming dynasty novel written by an anonymous author. It is about a merchant named Ximen Qing, his relations with his six wives,
and his affairs with neighbors' wives, maids, and prostitutes. Its pornographic qualities easily obscure its literary merits, which are numerous.
Hu used visual means to express the storyline artistically. He was good at the elaborate and realistic painting style.
This piece of work is carefully and precisely executed. The women are depicted very charming, their facial expressions are vivid and lively.
