HU YEFO (1908-1980), ATTRIBUTED TO, CHINESE PAINTING OF WATCHING THE STREAM

[ translate ]

A Chinese painting attributed to Hu Yefo (1908-1980), watching the stream. Steep cliffs tower in the composition while clouds swirl through mountain valleys. Gnarled pines stretch horizontally from rock crevices with sturdy trunks and dense, lively pine needles. Mountain brooks wind through valleys, and a thatched waterside pavilion sits by the stream in the foreground. Rocks are rendered with a combination of axe-cut and hemp-fiber texture strokes. The painting relies primarily on ink with subtle light color washes.
Ink and color on paper, hanging scroll.
Image: 73 x 35 cm.

Note: The work bears an inscription to Gustav Ecke and an inscription in the name of Hu Yefo, with seal marks. The inscription is dated Guiwei (1943).

Provenance: By repute, from an important private collection.

Gustav Ecke (1896-1971) was a German art historian and scholar of Chinese art. He joined Amoy University in 1923, later taught at Qinghua University and Fujen University in Beijing, and was associated with the National Institute of Architecture. He was a pioneering scholar of Chinese hardwood furniture and published Chinese Domestic Furniture in 1944. In 1945 he married artist and scholar Tseng Yu-Ho (Zeng Youhe). The couple moved to Hawaii in 1949, where Ecke served as curator of Chinese art at the Honolulu Academy of Arts and as professor of Asian art at the University of Hawaii from 1950 to 1966.
