[ translate ]

A Chinese painting attributed to Huang Binhong (1865-1955), walking with a staff in autumn mountains. This painting depicts rolling layered autumn mountains and deep wooded valleys, with travellers walking along mountain paths leaning on walking sticks. Continuous undulating peaks are delineated and textured with layered long and short ink lines using both wet and dry brushwork. Ink tones are aged, dense and substantial, tinted with pale ochre and light cyan to dot red leaves of autumn woods. Ancient trees cluster in mountain valleys, and a winding trail twists through the landscape. Two wanderers stroll amid autumn hills, enjoying the serenity of forests and springs.
Ink and color on paper, hanging scroll.
Image: 88 x 29 cm.

Note: The work bears an inscription to Gustav Ecke and an inscription in the name of Huang Binhong, with seal marks. The inscription is dated Bingxu (1946).

Provenance: By repute, from an important private collection.

Gustav Ecke (1896-1971) was a German art historian and scholar of Chinese art. He joined Amoy University in 1923, later taught at Qinghua University and Fujen University in Beijing, and was associated with the National Institute of Architecture.
