Among Huang Yongyu's many talents, woodcut prints were a favored means of expression in the 1940's and 1950's. This engraved portrait of his fellow artist, executed in 1954, demonstrates Huang Yongyu's approach to this medium of a single image reproduced in multiple. Both artists began their careers with wood carving and engraving, in addition to sharing Hunan as their native place. Huang Yongyu's inscription is to his Polish student at the Central Academy, Gerard Desput, written in 1959, the last year of Desput's stay in China, at Dayabao Hutong, where Qi Baishi resided. Other extant examples of this print include dedications to Chen Ji (1918-2004) and one inscribed by Qi Baishi himself.
