HUBERT ROBERT, TWO FIGURES WITH A DOG IN AN ARCHITECTURAL GARDEN, RED CHALK

Hubert Robert arrived in Rome in 1754 in the entourage of the French ambassador Étienne-François de Choiseul, comte de Stainville, and remained in Italy until 1765. Alongside his study of antiquities and architecture, he devoted himself to drawing the Roman countryside, in keeping with the teaching of Claude-Joseph Natoire (1700-1777), then director of the Académie de France in Rome, who regarded drawing en plein air as an essential part of an artist’s training. This experience was to have a lasting impact on Robert’s repertoire of landscapes and architectural subjects, both real and imaginary, often enlivened by figures engaged in everyday activities.
The present sheet is generally considered to be the pendant to The Washerwoman (Paris, Palais Galliera, 24 June 1965, lot 21) and has been dated to the 1770s-1780s. Stylistically, it may be compared with several drawings in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Valence (inv. D.31; inv. D.98; Hubert Robert, Promenades au XVIIIe siècle, exh. cat., Musée Angladon, Avignon, 2010, pp. 58, 81), both in the fluidity of the handling and in the treatment of the vegetation.
