HUGO, Victor (1802-1885). Autograph letter signed. 21 August, n.y.
Interesting autograph letter signed by Victor Hugo, addressed to an unidentified Monsieur , in which the writer intervenes on behalf of an unnamed individual, enclosing two letters and suggesting that the support of Camille Paganel (1795-1859) be sought: Si M. Paganel veut bien se joindre à nous, je crois que cela servirait grandement . Alternatively, Hugo recommends that the two letters be forwarded immediately to the Ministry of the Interior, enclosed together in a single envelope addressed to Edmond Leclerc, chief of staff. Of particular interest is the concluding passage, in which Hugo accompanies his intervention with a political and moral reflection: Ayez bon espoir, Monsieur. Les positions extrêmes ne sont jamais durables. Dieu est du parti de ceux qui souffrent . He concludes by asking the recipient to convey his respects to Madame de Charmont and assuring him of his sentimens très distingués .

Autograph letter signed, in French, on a bifolium, dated at foot 21 août and signed Victor Hugo . Traces of the original folds, some foxing and minor marginal defects. (1)
