HUNTING HORN / "OLIFANT",
Portugal, probably ca. 1480.
Ivory, octagonally carved, and silver mounts engraved with foliage and with a circumferential inscription: EL PODER EN DIOS. 2 eyelets. Fine cracks.
L 40 cm.
According to information provided by the former Director of the Victoria & Albert Museum, Dr. John F. Hayward, this horn belonged to the Dukes of Bragança and became part of the Collection of Lord Astor in Hever Castle around the turn of the century.
