HUNTING SWORD

German, probably Saxon, 3rd quarter of the 17th century.
Iron hilt, flat, open knuckle guard in the middle part with decorative discs. Small oval guard plate with punctiform perforations. Solid, square iron grip attachment with riveted buckhorn plates on both sides. Single-edged blade (L 54.3 cm), hollow cut on one side, remains of an etched decoration.
L 68.5 cm.

Hunting swords or rapiers with these characteristic buckhorn-covered grips were common throughout Germany; cf. Deutsches Jagdmuseum München: Catalogue 1977, Ill. No. 2060. G. Quaas ed.: Hofjagd, aus den Sammlungen des Deutschen Historischen Museums, Berlin 2002, p. 67, No. 5.
