Haile Selassie Signed 1961 Belgrade Conference Cachet, JSA Authenticated
Signed Cover

Haile Selassie (1892-1975). A 7.25" x 5" cover commemorating the first Summit Conference of Non-Aligned Heads of State or Government, which took place in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, from September 1 to 6, 1961, boldly signed and dated by Haile Selassie as Emperor of Ethiopia. Bearing a Belgrade Conference 1000-dinar miniature souvenir sheet affixed at upper right and two circular Belgrade cancellations dated September 1, 1961, the opening day of the conference. Embossed cachet in dark teal blue at lower left reads: "Beogradska Konferencija Septembar 1961." Lightly toned with faint soiling and creasing. Adhesive residue at verso with small paper remnant at flap. In near fine condition. Accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity by JSA.

Haile Selassie was one of the 25 heads of state who attended and spoke at the summit. His address strongly urged global economic cooperation and decried the devastating effects of war. As emperor of Ethiopia from 1930 to 1974, Selassie sought to modernize his country and who steered it into the mainstream of post-World War II African politics. He brought Ethiopia into the League of Nations and the United Nations. Widely considered to be a defining figure in modern Ethiopian history, he is accorded divine importance in Rastafari, an Abrahamic religion that emerged in the 1930s. Seeking to modernize Ethiopia, Selassie introduced political and social reforms including the 1931 constitution and the abolition of slavery in 1942.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
