Halachic Response from Rabbi Reuven HaLevi Denenburg, Author of Rosh L’Reuveni

Letter of blessing and Chidushay Torah from Rabbi Reuven HaLevi Denenburg addressed to his disciple, Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Valk, upon the occasion of his acceptance as Rabbi of Kossevei.
Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch would later become Av Beis Din of Pinsk and authored Kesser Kehuna on the Sifri.
Rabbi Reuven’s letter includes a Halachic response regarding removing a sefer Torah for maftir in a case where there is a mistake in the sefer Torah.
The letter is handwritten and signed by Rabbi Reuven himself while the Halachic response is written by a scribe.

Rabbi Reuven HaLevi Denenburg (1817 - 1887) was a prominent Torah scholar deferentially referred to by the leaders of his generation as the “Rabbeinu Tam of our times.” He himself remarked: “I am sure that I will not be shamed and not be embarrassed of my Torah in the next world!” Both the Beis HaLevi and Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor declared that his rulings were not to be challenged. Rabbi Reuven served as Rabbi of Denenburg until his passing in 1887. The majority of his writings were burned, and the few surviving remnants were published in his book of responsa titled Rosh LeReuveini on the four sections of the Shulchan Aruch.
