One page (90 x 193 mm, sight), [Philadelphia, March 4, 1793–January 31, 1795]. Matted, framed, and glazed with an address panel directed to "Mr. Rutherford" and with an engraved portrait of Hamilton.
Inviting Senators to a family dinner. Hamilton here writes to John Rutherford, a New York legal colleague who subsequently moved to New Jersey, where he served as a member of the General Assembly in 1788 and 1789 and then as a Federalist United States Senator, 1791–1798.
"I called at your Quarters a while ago to ask you to take with two or three friends a family Dinner with me to day. A word in answer by the bearer will oblige." In a postscript, Hamilton adds, "Will you tell Mr. Frelinghuyssen [sic] that if he will be of the party I shall esteem it a favour." Frederick Frelinghuysen, a lawyer and formerly a member of the Continental Congress in 1778 and 1782, was the other United States Senator from New Jersey.
