This first volume describes Hamilton's experiences of traveling New York, Boston, New England, and Philadelphia. He explores their political circumstances and elaborates on matters including climate and religion.
Throughout "Men and Manners in America," Thomas Hamilton describes with scathing honesty, and a sometimes sarcastic wit, the political and social structures of the newly independent United States. Hamilton journeyed to America in 1830, determined to write a conclusive and impartial account of its democracy. On his return, however, he was desperately aware that this impartiality had produced writings with the potential to deeply offend. His book was published almost a year later (1833) when Hamilton finally felt duty-bound to speak the truth.
Thomas Hamilton (1789-1842) was a Scottish soldier and author. His novel "Cyril Thornton" appeared in 1827. It is partly autobiographical, with Hamilton's early impressions of Scottish university life and Glasgow citizens. In 1829, Hamilton published the "Annals of the Peninsular Campaign" in which he participated as a soldier and was wounded. His "Men and Manners in America" appeared in 1833.
