[ translate ]

Exquisite and very rare antique hand-carved ebony panel. Made in Batavia for the Dutch market, period 1680-1720. The panel is vigorously and forcefully carved in high relief, depicting flowers in a vase. This panel originally formed a door of a cabinet. The panel is screwed in/on an ebonised wooden frame presumably made in the 20th century. Dimensions: 52. 4 x 63. 2 cm. Weight: 4. 5 kg. In the 17th century, the Dutch East India Company was very successful in, amongst others, the trade of textiles from India and furniture made in Indonesia and India for the European market. Ebony was one of the most prized and sought-after of the exotic woods. In "Furniture from Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India" (Delft, 1985) , Jan Veenendaal discusses relief carved ebony surfaces. Veenendaal dates low-relief carving to between 1650-1680 and gives the high relief carving to between 1680-1720. In fair condition. Damages and drying cracks. The pictures are part of the description. This lot will be sent via registered mail.
