Handle Basket and Coupes (3) - .833 silver, .934 silver - Netherlands - 1927

Capital silver basket with handle. Made in 1927 by ‘Lodewijk Willem van Kooten’ in Amsterdam. See the clear silver hallmarks. Typical design and finish for this silver basket. Specific hand-forged style: a combination of the Dutch Nieuwe Stijl and Art Deco. He was a silversmith as well as an artist. This design is unique. Large silver objects of this calibre by Lodewijk Willem van Kooten are extremely rare. Is almost never found! ! A worldwide appreciation for his artisanship has developed over recent years. This silver basket with handle weighs no less than 1156 grams. It has a length of 32 cm and a width of 26 cm. The height of this basket is 9 cm. The height up to the handle is 26 cm. This unique piece is in a very neat condition. Minor signs of wear/scartches are present. Museum Quality and very rare. He was born in 1903 and died in 1972. Attended the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam. He was the son of goldsmith and jeweller Lodewijk Willem II (Louis) van Kooten (1875-1949) and handicraft teacher and business woman Elisabeth George Meijer (1880-1946) . He went to France in 1922 for his study to further develop his arts and craftsmanship, this was sponsored by his father. His father also went to France at age 20 and was trained by the famous Paris jeweller Alphonse Fouquet. Lody returned to The Netherlands in 1925 and married Albertine Anna Kok in 1928. As a wedding gift from his parents, he received a house in Blaricum designed by Hendrik Petrus Berlage. The renowned ‘Berlage style’. He became a member of the ‘Larense schilderskring’ and organised art exhibitions as their secretary-treasurer. In the 30s he also worked for the Belgian firm Wolfers Frere in Brussels. He received a special prize in 1937. He won the silver medal for his silver bonbonniere. He entered with only one item and was immediately rewarded. He was awarded the ‘Diplome de Medaille d' Argent’ in addition to his silver medal. In addition, a set of 2 related coupes. Made by Lodewijk Willem van Kooten. These are made of 833/1000 pure silver. Also manufactured in 1927. The combined weight of the coupes is 820 grams. They have a height of 7 cm. The height up to the handle is 8. 7 cm. The length from handle to handle approx. 22. 5/cm. The depth approx. 14. 5 cm. These items come from a private collection. Bought at a famous international auction house and thus returned to the Netherlands.
